Talk To Angels are set to appear at this years SxSW and we managed to catch up with the band before they hop overseas to talk with them about their set at the upcoming Festival as well as a couple of other things.
1) How many times have you been to SxSW?
This year is our first time. Talk To Angels are SXSW Virgins! Mickey our keyboard player came here a couple of years ago with Embrace and had a ball, but for the band it's a whole new adventure and we are very excited about it!
Actually, we did play Austin in November last year though. We were on our self financed tour of the US, which came about due to us being offered the chance to play CMJ in NY, and then another gig in LA was offered three weeks after the CMJ one... so we decided to stay in the US and try fill up a whole tour. A great Austin band called The American People offered us the chance to play the election night party which they were involved in. It's a night we'll remember for ever, seeing Obama win, and the effect that the result had on all the people at the party. Random strangers hugging one another, and everyone saying that America had finally got her soul back. Moving stuff.
2) What's the best thing about being in Austin? or if you've not been before.... What are your tourism related plans?
I think that there's so much going on music wise that we want to see... I doubt that in the few days we are in Austin we'll have time for much tourism! We are coming to meet as many music loving folks as possible and see some great bands and hopefully we'll get an invite to fly back out for some more tour dates and hang out with you guys.
3) Why are you playing SxSW? (Cos we hear the money isn't too good)
SXSW has an amazing reputation all over the world. The entire music industry is all gathered in one amazing city. As a band we want our music to reach as many people as possible and the festival seems like the perfect place to make that a real possibility. We don’t get paid but we are so lucky to get the opportunity to come.
4) Who are you showcasing for, and where and when can we expect to see you?
This year sees the first ever Yorkshire Music Showcase, and Talk To Angels are honoured to be the first band ever to play it! We are sharing the stage with some very good bands from our home region - Sky Larkin and Wild Beasts as well as a few others. We perform at 12 noon on Saturday 21st March at Latitude 30. I urge you to come along and see some great music as well as sampling some fine Yorkshire food!
We have also been asked to play at Lamberts on W 2nd Street on Friday 20th around midnight. We share that stage with some great bands from all over the world, including Spain and Japan. Should be an awesome line up!
5) Which other bands/artists are you most looking forward to seeing over music week?
Wow, there's so many bands playing this year that we'd love to see. Akron/Family, Cold War Kids, Dananananaykroyd, Dan Le Sac/Scroobius Pip, Echo and the Bunnymen, Explosions In The Sky, Restiform Bodies, Doseone/Themselves... It's such a diverse and fantastic line up this year and the place will be crawling with real true music heads. We are gonna be spoilt for choice.
6) Will you visit the Film or Interactive sections of SxSW this year? Or is time tight?
Sadly due to our commitments at home in the UK like finishing off our video and single and completing the album, we won't be around for the film part of SXSW. We will make up for that by filming everything and everyone and making our own film. Hey maybe we can return in 2010 and have a special screening for you all!
7) What does the rest of 2009 hold for you?
Well 2009 has got off to quite a tough start for Talk To Angels. Last November while we were out in the States on tour, our bass player Chris and our manager Daz were both hit by a car while crossing a road in Illinois and they were very badly hurt. They have both made miraculous recoveries, although you will probably spot Daz hobbling around Austin on his crutches! The messages of support from our US fans kept our spirits up and inspired us. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all the staff at The Carle Foundation Hospital in Champagne Illinois for taking care of the guys and thanks to them we are able to continue doing what we adore doing, which is making and playing music. We play some UK festivals this summer and we look forward to a tour of the UK & Ireland. We have a 3 year US Visa so please tell all your agents and talent bookers to check us out as we would like to tour here again from October. The single Enemies Closer will be out in the early summer, and hopefully we'll get the album out later in the year. The writing side of things is such fun at the moment. Folk are really starting to take notice of us, which is cool! We'll work hard and see what happens, I guess.
