There was a moment during last night's Jimmy Eat World concert when frontman Jim Adkins, sodden in sweat, stepped back from the mike to survey a frenzied Bristol crowd.
It happened during 'Blister', a track that Tom Linton takes lead vocals on, and Jim was clearly taken aback at another jam-packed crowd, at the end of another sold-out tour, an audience that laps up everything that Jimmy Eat World have to offer.
Much has been made of the life span of Jimmy Eat World. Active since 1993, the band have been through fifteen years of the usual trials and tribulations of the record industry. But as evidenced by Jim's shirt, the work-rate and desire to keep on recording, performing and networking is still there.
The diversity evident at a Jimmy gig is amazing. Sure you've got your Paramore fans in abundance, but there's also a stunning variety. There's not many gigs where you'll see John Peel look-a-likes down the front.
Before the final song, Jim picks out one of these middle age fans at the back wearing a 'Clarity' era T-Shirt. “That's old school” exclaims Jim. Before informing everyone they're heading back to Arizona in three days.
But if the fervour displayed by fans tonight is anything to go by, you wouldn't bet against Jimmy Eat World managing another fifteen years.
Jimmy Eat World have one show left on their current tour, at the Roundhouse tomorrow night (March 3rd). They release the second single from their Chase This Light album this Monday. 'Always Be' is out March 3rd on CD and 7" vinyl.
Jimmy Eat World U.K Tour Schedule:
03 Mar 2008 - Roundhouse, London
15 June 2008 – Donington Park, Download Festival
No decent crowd pics i'm afraid....
We've been to see Jimmy several times now, and its amazing how they generate such good varied crowds....
I'm the one in the Clarity "old skool" shirt. It was freaky to be picked out like that from the stage by Jim. I've been a fan since 2001 and saw them at Birm Academy in 02, which is where the shirt came from. They are every bit as good live now as then, though I'm not convinced of the longevity of the new album compared with the earlier ones. But then how would/could you top Bleed American!
We saw J.E.W. at Birm Acadmy a couple of weeks back, on Feb 19th, and the set was about half an hour shorter :-( probably because they were recording it. We bought the live CD and it is excellent quality and a very good idea, though not if they cut the set short for it.
Bristol was a truly excellent concert, and a great review by you Gavin. Cheers. Jerry.
Hey Jerry, i'm surprised you didn't go redder than your jimmy t-shirt after that.
It was a great gig, and if that is the case, I'm glad they weren't recording the Bristol gig.
I agree with you about the longevity, I personally think Clarity was a great great album and remains unmatched, but Bleed American probably gets as close as possible.
i'm still amazed at how many droplets of fluid flung from frontman Jim Adkins hair?!?!?
ps: hey jerry if you really are thee, you've become quite the legend
I think J.E.W. are the legend, not me for wearing a t-shirt ;-)
btw - not that I condone or agree with bootlegs in any way of course but ...
check out www.jimmyeatworldlive.co.uk for some of their ripped concerts.
cheers. J.

Great review, and I completely agree that both the band and the crowd were really up for it that night. Did you get any videos or crowd pics?
