German electro rockers MIT took to the stage at the Camden Barfly Saturday night, ably assisted by Canadians Born Ruffians and also Kieran from Four Tet, who was working alongside One Little Plane.
Part of the “Kill 'Em All” banner, it was quite an eclectic mix of new music, kicking off with the indie/acoustic pop of One Little Plane.
Actually the opening paragraph is a bit misleading, because although Kieran is a part of One Little Plane tonight, the driving force behind OLP is Kathryn Bint, an American songstress who has now settled in London. Bint sings rather quietly, but captivates the audience with her perfect measured voice.
And it's not just the polished vocals that shine through. Some of the lyrical content, particularly on tracks like 'Sunshine Kid' really excel, making 2008 a year to watch for One Little Plane.
Following on from One Little Plane are the latest band to come through the production line of Canada. Toronto's Born Ruffians introduced some much needed spark and gusto into the night.
Born Ruffians are the kind of band you would love at your wedding reception. With quirky song titles such as 'Badonkadonkey' and 'Kurt Vonnegut', Warp Records have a beast of a band on their hands - a group of three lads that although seemingly shy (perhaps it was the four gigs in two days), transcend the Canadian hype machine and produce a cavalcade of pop-rocking hits.
Finally, German art-rockers (call them what you will), MIT hit the stage, departing sharply from the indie fodder offered up just a few minutes ago. Is it electro? punk funk? indie disco? acid party? Who cares, this is dance music at its finest. And in frontman Edi, the band have a focal point to drive through all their energies....
Not one to shirk a heckler, (Edi blows kisses to them) MIT rock the Camden Barfly to its very core. The rapturous ovations that followed, will surely pursue them as they continue their sonic spectacular throughout London this week.

Was going to see the Born Ruffians the night before at 93 Feet East, but got waylaid. Looks like a good one, hopefully they'll be back over here soon.

Wow, that dude from Born Ruffians looks just like Jack White. Are you sure they're not his latest side project? xoxo
