SAG face the cruelty of a festival-warming early afternoon set with their typical brand of grace and loveliness, but it's clear that they're a little cagey.
Sweet and solemn songs are well-matched to gently stoic light projections showing ambient geometry, rotating through with as much acuity as Sian's soprano-ranged daytime lullabies. We are prompted to think of glistening dew on a sunshiney glen, which is a pleasant visual but reveals that our minds are wandering a bit during the set.
SAG steal our focus back with set-closing “Motionless,” as Sian looks up for the first time and we see fire in her eyes. The boys start thrashing their strings and skins, and Sian freaks out with jingle bells, and we start really living in their moment, and then it's over just as it's getting great. Ah, cruel life.
Beach Ball Rating*: Rolling delicately into a half-sunbathed corner, poised and mysterious.
*We brought the Strangeglue signature beach balls out for their 2009 debut at Loop. We thought how much fun they had at each show was a fair metric to share.
