Vendors, performers, and punters alike tell us they eagerly anticipate Sunday headliners Buena Vista Social Club, who go on to prove their undeniable cool with the following time-tested performance tactics:

  1. holding a one-sided conversation to the crowd in rapid-fire Spanish without any heed to the English's general confusion
  2. playing an encore that seemed longer than the set
  3. taking stage bows and crediting different members of the band in a farewell that seemed longer than the encore
  4. having a painter onstage
  5. leaving aforementioned painter's presence unexplained, again adding to general confusion
  6. delighting the hell out of us all with the legendary charisma even the most ignorant non-Cubano could appreciate.

We drink to that--out of an open bottle of gin and tonic that has been passed to us by generous strangers who had the bottle given to them by yet more generous strangers. Trust and togetherness have never felt so grand. ¡Gracias, Buena Vista y Standon!
