Jens Lekman Live at SxSW 2008 - Mohawk Patio

SxSW 2008 Live: Jens Lekman

15th March 2008 | by Gavin Riley

It was a tale of two venues and two performances for Jens Lekman here at South By Southwest last night.

Taking to the stage at Emo's at 8pm, he gave a solid solo acoustic performance, impressing the audience with his Swedish charm and wit.

But there's no denying that Lekman excels with his full band, and at the Mohawk Patio later that night, he takes to the stage with his all-female backing band, with stunning effect.

Churning out many of his tracks from his superb LP 'Night Falls Over Kortedala', Lekman interweaves his songs with little stories, some familiar, like his prose before 'A Postcard To Nina'.

But some of the less familiar stories leave the crowd captivated, including one he told about two men who came up to him after a recent show in Florence. They told him not to say such nice things about Florence, '"it's a shithole they said", so I've learnt not to say such nice things about places I visit - so fuck Austin!'

There's no doubting that Jens Lekman will make a great story-telling grandpa or a superb Jackanory presenter, but for now we are grateful for his wit, his intellect, but most of all, his mesmerising music.
