Mid-afternoon in a day cafe which has it's front end populated by a nice, civilised, 6 rows of chairs. It's a strange place for Ra Ra Riot to take to the stage.
The six-piece do so with aplomb though. Blasting through a half-dozen or so songs, they whip the audience up into a furore of rhythmic claps. Although never tempting any of the seated attendees to ovation position, today is the very definition of a warm reception.
Not that there was much doubt that their blend of artful violin backed rock 'n' roll fun would receive anything less. We still reckon that one song sounds far too alike to Patrick Wolf though, it was almost tempting to start a chorus of "you've got me in that, magic position" during the show.
Preceeding them was trio Akron/Family. A trio of experimental folk people. Making the most of a robust backing track, bouncing drums were coupled with screeching feedback which was twisted and contorted to something somewhat resembling a melody.
Spirited attempts at inducing audience participation were not easily rebuffed, and they soon started a round of holistic chanting among the usually stoic audience to kick things off to a flamboyant beginning.
