Come-down music never sounds as good when you have yet to get high, or so we hear.

The XX's fired-down goth-R&B is a little heavy on the moodiness for an audience that wants to dance, but they are odd-looking enough to keep people around. Plus, watching someone poke out percussion on electronic drum pads never gets old. There is a blinding red square that lights up behind them, proving an instance where Loop's hit-or-miss techie-design school vomit careens into your eye with searing pain.

This kind of works for The XX, however - with their own expert command of pacing and sustains, it's apt that they have their own light source behind them. It doesn't matter what time it is outside when you pwn the sun.

Beach Ball Rating*: Deeply, blissfully hyperventilating its own CO2 to float into a beautifully weird zone.

*We brought the Strangeglue signature beach balls out for their 2009 debut at Loop.  We thought how much fun they had at each show was a fair metric to share.
