When you envision a suitable venue for lo-fi punk, even the words 'garage' and 'basement' seem far too grand. 'car-hole' and 'Fritzl's room' seem far more appropriate.
As such, it was quite an unexpected surprise to witness Ohio trio Times New Viking performing upon a grand, roomy stage decorated with majestic carpet, dining chairs, drapes, wooden bannisters guarding the periphery and chandliers dangling overhead. We have to say: the grandeur suited them very well.
While they do lose their lo-fi edge during live performances of their work, this does present the benefit of allowing their unique sense of melody to shine ever-brighter at the fore.
