Albums Out This Week: W/C 17th August 2009

We've got good punk, bad punk and the sad punk, with a side of indie music in this week's album releases.

First, the good. New York's The Cast Before the Break follow up their surprisingly amazing full-band debut with Still, you can read the individual synopsis for the changes. Then there's up-and-comers Broadway Calls, for whom their band name may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If you want to listen to trash flavoured trash, look no further than Mr. Calvin Harris.

The Cast Before the Break: Still

The second full-band album from SG's favourite NY-based post-rock/hardcore band. A more mature sound beckons second time around with the scope widended, but the focus more intimate. If you're reading this, you have no excuse, get!

Vagabond: You Don't Know The Half Of It

Vegabond a merely another band yielding pop tunes accessible to the entire world, in an attempt to be the next Oasis the band have actually sold out and created an album that sounds horrific. Trust us when we say, you don't even want to listen to half of this album!

Just Jack: All Night Cinema

Just Jack is just terrible. This is the British chaps third album and what started off as bad has only got worse. The lead single from the album is called The Day I Died, let's just hope the lead single on his fourth album will be titled The Day My Music Career Died.

RX Bandits: Mandala

This will be the first of RX Bandit's albums as a four piece, Chris Sheets left the band for undisclosed reasons during the recording process of Mandala. Even with the loss of their trombone player the band still used some horns for the LP and have already been commended for their ability to adapt to the drastic change.

As Tall As Lions: You Can't Take It With You

The Long Island experimental indie punkers take their sound to wonderful new heights and possibly-metaphorical depths on their third studio album. They're gonna get points for the album artwork though.

Broadway Calls: Good Views, Bad News

The Oregon trio join The Gaslight Anthem as potential punk breakthrough acts. While their sound may be more conventional than the aforementioned, they certainly have everything... except auto-tune, and crap fringes. Passion, intelligence, tunes: that should tide them over very well.

Dr. Manhattan: Jam Dreams

Named presumably for the glowing, blue, naked god from the graphic novel Watchmen, support slots with Fear Before (the March of Flames) will doubtless boost this Illinonian bands fortunes to at least moderate proportions. This album will have to do the rest.

Jay Reatard: Watch Me Fall

The Reatard's second full-length solo album comes to us three years after his first. For garage-rock thrills heavy on the emotional content and melody, you can't go wrong with this one.

Mute Math: Armistice

"Our goal is to embarrass the first record, that's what we're trying to do here, and I think we're on point to pull it off." - say the band. Some people here at SG would beg to differ, but Mute Math have never shied from controversy. Judge for yourself on the alt. post-rockers' album number two.

Third Eye Blind: Ursa Major

"That band, with that song, you know the one" - also known as Third Eye Blind return with their fourth studio album. Four years in the making, it will be followed up by Ursa Minor: either a full new album or a collection of cast-offs depending on your perspective.

Calvin Harris: Ready For The Weekend

Are you a Calvin Harris fan? Well, he loves to lie to you, treat you like garbage and expects you to just take it. Back in April he claimed that the good people on airport baggage had lost the only copy of this album. Turns out, he was full of crap. Speaking of crap, here's his new album.

Simian Mobile Disco: Temporary Pleasure

Recorded throughout 2008 and '09 in the band's East London studio with guests such as Beth Ditto (Gossip) and Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip). Likely earns them more 'cool points' than an Andy Warhol reference, does it make them good though? Jury's out.
