Albums Out This Week: W/C 22nd September 2008

22nd September 2008 | by Aidan Williamson

As record labels prepare to enter the fourth quarter of the financial year, the greatest hits, compilation albums and other assorted non-original albums will be relentlessly released.

Since it's still early though, there's plenty of original work available. Mogwai bring back U.K post-rock with their long awaited "The Hawk is Howling" album. Also Kings of Leon bring us more of their southern indie-rock and TV on the Radio write an epistle to the world of science.

Mogwai: The Hawk is Howling

Scotland's best post-rock band named after a race of schizophrenic asexual cretins make their return with album number six. It sees their return to producer Andy Miller whom the haven't worked with for over ten years.

Kings Of Leon: Only By The Night

The fourth album from Tennessee's Kings of Leon, has led to mixed reviews, although the band themselves have proclaimed it as 'the best work of their career so far'. Songwriter Caleb Followill attributed his writing success to the 'pain relieving drugs' he took following a fight with brother Nathan, drummer for the Kings.

The Undertones : An Anthology

Fifty-five tracks by famed punk band The Undertones are yours for the taking with the release of their anthology CD. With CD one taking the form of a greatest hits CD, the second CD gives us various rare recordings including demo mixes, live recordings and rehearsal takes of the band.

The Spinto Band: Moonwink

The band that brought you the anthems "Oh Mandy" and "Brown Boxes" release their second full length LP, the follow-up to 2006 debut "Nicely and Nicely Done".

TV On The Radio : Dear Science,

Punctuation in album titles never seems to make it through the distributors. Despite their pleas to retain the comma of the album title, it has now been consigned to the punctuation bin, a lonely place inhabited by Panic's exclamation mark and the apostraphe from the 13-18 demographic. Thats a lil sad aint it.

Jenny Lewis: Acid Tongue

The second solo album  from Jenny Lewis, the co-vocalist from Rilo Kiley. The follow-up to "Rabbit Fur Coat" features more of her staple quirky meditations on lost love.

Cold War Kids: Loyalty to Loyalty

Another second album this week comes from Californian band Cold War Kids. The quartet will head up the album with the single "Something Is Not Right With Me".

The Airborne Toxic Event: s/t

L.A. based rock band who incorporate string instruments and keyboards, along with a standard rock line-up of guitar, drums, and bass guitar. They are signed to Majordomo Records.

Within Temptation: Black Symphony

Live album from the Dutch white metal band. Released separately in DVD and CD format, the CD album captures the audio of the band's February 2008 performance at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam.

Rolo Tomassi: Hysterics

''Hysterics'' is Rolo Tomassi's debut album recorded this spring 2008. Hailing from Sheffield in England the quintet bring the jazz to experimental punk. The quintet have supported bands such as 'I Was a Cub Scout' and '65daysofstatic' on tour.
