There's no pleasing some people, and those people are the collective us. Following the much derided decision by Smashing Pumpkins to embark upon a twentieth-anniversary tour: some have made issue with the band's choice of set-list.
Rather than make it the live representation of a greatest hits album, the Pumpkins have instead decided to focus on new material. This is a choice which has left many fans considerably frustrated.
In an attempt to repel the criticism, the band's front-man Billy Corgan addressed the dissenting fans directly during a live show in their hometown of Chicago. “For twenty years we’ve tried to make people happy and failed again, and again,†Corgan remarked. “What is it? Is it the funny voice? How come people just aren’t happy with us?
“You know, sometimes crowds remind me of ex-girlfriends, and you remind me of this one that took a lot of my money and didn’t like me.
“She told me she loved me but she wasn’t really there for me. That’s what this reminds me of. It’s that kind of relationship.
“Alternative means different to what everyone else is doing, including those reunion bands that go out and play the old songs,
"For those of you we disappointed, we’re sorry, we hope you’ll give us another chance."
During the course of events, he also asked any rebels to raise their hands. Reports of a Mexican Wave resulting are completely fabricated.
