Steve Mason, the former vocalist with The Beta Band, who split back in 2004, has thrown his hat into the solo artist ring with news of a new album.

Not that the whole 'solo artist' spiel is new to Mason. Previously he had been a member of the Bright Eyes/Dashboard Confessional club: bands of one permanent member who adopt alternative titles for themselves. Under such names, (King Biscuit Time & Black Affair) Mason has released two prior albums, but this one will be the first using the name his mother gave him.

The first track to be taken from the album, 'All Come Down', will be released through his official site Stevemasontheartist.com as a digital download on December 7, 2009.

For the venture, Mason is teaming up with famed producer Richard X, who made his name through the quickly tiresome "bootleg" scene, which saw all manner of songs thrown together to see which fit. Thankfully, that phase is now over, not that we didn't enjoy the guitar line of an Anthrax song overlaid on the vocals and drums of a B*Witched track. Actually, no, we didn't.

The album will be called Boys Outside and is expected in March of 2010.
