Last year held one of the great surprises in alternative rock. Usually bands have a slight curve up to greatness, but The Cast Before the Break had it right out of the gate.
Their début full-band album managed to garner huge acclaim both here at SG and pretty much everywhere else the record was heard. Combining post-rock aesthetics with an insightful introspective vocal style and a veneer of post-hardcore we got a concept album where every track was exemplary in the album As Your Shoulders Turn On You.
Eighteen months later and we have the follow-up Still on our hands. We're pleased to be the ones to exclusively bring you the rather awesome song "The Hill" from the new album for your listening pleasure. Other tracks from the album will be leaked through various other web publication, but we think we got the diamond in the pearl collection.
Here's what TCBTB's lead vocalist TJ Foster had to say about the song:
"The Hill" actually started as an acoustic song of mine with a lot of finger-picking guitar. I showed it to Jordan [Stewart, guitar & vocals] and Jeremy [Carter, guitar, vocals and keyboard] one day and they loved the vocal melodies so much that they wanted to turn it into something full band. I guess it was one of those spontaneous moments in Jordan's basement where everything just kind of gelled together, and suddenly we had our 'single' song.
"The song's themes deal directly with our album cover, which was taken by Alicia Bock who so aptly titled it "The Hill." I got this image in my head of a little boy chasing a little girl over a hill, and from the beginning of the hill to the end of the hill they experience their entire relationship as if they were adults. They meet, they fall in love, they fall out of love, and then when the chase is over, they're right back where they started, only at the other side."
All that remains then is to give you the song. Stay tuned to SG for news of the album's release.
