Greenday released American Idiot in 2004 to wide critical acclaim. It was big, bold, rather mainstream and sold by the truck load. It increased their popularity a hundred fold and transformed the bands image from a cult punk trio to a punk-pop behemoth that stomped across the entire globe, selling out arenas and venues who's capacities are somewhere near the hundreds of thousands.

It also isolated their older fans and almost made the band a hate target for the "sell-out" badge that they suddenly wore so proudly. Where had the Dookie and Nimrod sound gone?

5 years after their biggest hit to date, the boys are back with the announcement of their eighth studio album (They've been going since 1990 remember) which has been given the official title of 21st Century Breakdown.

The record is said to be split into three different parts; Heroes And Cons, Charlatans And Saints and Horseshoes And Hand Grenades. It would seem the air of pretentiousness that surrounded American Idiot will be present here...

The release is due sometime in May but US citizens can pre order the album now HERE.
