'Emo' flag-bearers My Chemical Romance are promising a return to 'pure' songwriting for their fourth album together, promising that early fans of their work will find something to enjoy in their new output.
The band's first album was a relatively gritty gothic-punk affair which took them through to their second album Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. One which emphasised the poppier elements of their sound while ramping up the BPM. Come album three, The Black Parade though, and it was all matching sequins, make-up, hair dye, militaristic Queen stylings and pseudo-religious imagery.
They also took the place (previously occupied by Slipknot) on the front of the hoodies worn by every twelve-year-old being dropped off for school by their 'soccer-mum' in their 4x4 complete with pedestrian decimating bull-bars.
Commenting on their fourth album, the band explained:
"I don't think this is gonna be a 'kitchen sink' record. I think it's going to get by on its musicianship and its own merits in the songs. It's not going to be hiding behind a veil of fiction or uniforms and makeup anymore. ... From the stuff we've been playing so far, just feels very pure. That's the best way to describe it. People who were really big fans of our first record, they'll find things they're really going to love about the new material — and not because we sound like that first record at all, it's because there's a purity to it. There's less happening."
