New news today points toward Billy Corgan hiring a nineteen year old drummer after open audition took place to fill the space.
Ex-member and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin relieved himself of Pumpkin duty back in March (SG News HERE) and Corgan then announced in the same month that open auditions were going to take place to replace Chamberlain on April 10th of this year (read that news HERE).
Well its June and that was almost two months ago and so now, news has come of a possible new drummer.
It all starts with a nineteen year old American freshman by the name of Mike Byrne. Byrne is currently in a band named Moses, Smell The Roses (no comment...) and back in April, his Myspace page read this: "Mike is jamming with the Smashing Pumpkins for a week in May. Holy crap."
And then a little later: "Mike is off for another couple weeks at pumpkin camp."
So far so strange but then last week Corgan almost solidified things by writing a blog post that included this:
"I think I have my drummer of the future. I've worked with him so far for one week and all indications are really good that he's the man for the job. Going to work with him some more before it becomes official."
Normally we don't play up to question marks and unofficial information (thats not our kind of thing) but this just seems too real to ignore.
Corgan is still sticking to his promise of some new Pumpkins material by October so he'll have to work quick if he wants to keep to his word.
As always, we'll keep you posted.
