USA Today is reporting that the FCC of America has negotiated settlement in the long-running dispute over the persistent practice known as "payola".
It will cost organisations such as Clear Channel up to £7 million in fines, and will include several key pledges to donate airtime to independent record labels and keep closer independent scrutiny of broadcasters and their relationships with record labels.
Former New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer (pictured) is widely credited with advancing the case against payola when his office prosecuted payola related crimes, settling out of court with Sony BMG, Warner and Universal in 2005.
