Elephant Stone is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Rishi Dhir, a founding member of Montreal pop/psyche veterans the High Dials.

He also makes claim to be the sitar player for basically every outlaw psyche band out there (Black Angels, the Earlies, Hopewell, Brian Jonestown Massacre)

The band has certainly been busy as a whole over the last few years. In 2009, Elephant Stone released their debut album, The Seven Seas. It was warmly received by fans and critics alike, culminating in a place on the long-list for the coveted 2009 Polaris Music Prize.

An EP has since followed (The Glass Box EP) along with jaunts around Europe.

2011 is shaping to be an even busier year as they prepare for an upcoming US tour, a new record, and their return to UK soil. And of course the South By Southwest Festival.

We caught up with them to see how preparations for SxSW were going:

1) How many times have you been to SxSW?

First time for the band. However, I've played the fest a bunch of times (4 or so) with my old band (The High Dials)

2) What's the best thing about being in Austin? Or if you've not been before.... What are your tourism related plans?

The warmth, the music, the people, the bats, the open bars, the parties, the shows... it's all good! (That sounds like a list of very uninspired band names!)

3) Why are you playing SxSW? ('Cos we hear the money isn't too good)

Its the place where dreams come true. Seriously, though, it a great way to play in front of music fans and, if you're lucky, "industry" peeps. Also, it's a great way to hang out with all our musician friends who we don't get to see much throughout the year.

4) Who are you showcasing for, and where and when can we expect to see you?

We've got a bunch of shows (seven in all), but our official showcase is part of the Planet Quebec Showcase. Basically, it's us and a bunch of other great Quebec bands (Luyas, Little Scream...)

5) Which other bands/artists are you most looking forward to seeing over music week?

Wow. Where to start? I've been going over the schedule for a couple of weeks now and marking down all the bands I want to see, but not sure if it'll be doable with our schedule. Off the top of my head: Soundtrack of Our Lives, the Bees, King Creosote, Suuns, Black Angels, Nicole Atkins... the list goes on...

6) Will you visit the Film or Interactive sections of SxSW this year? Or is time tight?

Unfortunately, to quote Booker T, time is tight.

7) What does the rest of 2011 hold for you?

Recording a new record, festival dates (Canada and maybe Iceland), and a UK Tour.
