Les Jupes describe themselves aptly as: "Four kids from the middle of the North American continent, making modern music for people living in the past."

Their debut album, which was released in January is built on Michael Petkau Falk’s warm baritone voice, charging through waves of psychedelia and driving rhythms.

We chatted to Michael about their upcoming shows at SxSW:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) How many times have you been to SxSW?

This is Les Jupes' first time playing SXSW. I went down last year to check it out and get my bearings on the festival to help make sure that this year can be a success.

2) What's the best thing about being in Austin? Or if you've not been before.... What are your tourism related plans?

Austin is such a relaxed and easy-going town - the people are unbelievably friendly. Its the cultural oasis of the south, and with such great food around every corner. It's a pretty comfortable and creative place. We'll likely spend most of our time downtown, but also venture down to South Congress and South 1st.

3) Why are you playing SxSW? ('Cos we hear the money isn't too good)

If we just took gigs for the money we'd likely be bitter alcoholics playing top 40 covers in suburban frat bars. And the world doesn't need any more of that!

SXSW is a great opportunity to get new people from around the world interested in your band. The competition is stiff, so you gotta hustle your show - but it's also an important stamp of relevancy and approval, which helps when booking other shows and festivals or approaching members of the music industry.

4) Who are you showcasing for, and where and when can we expect to see you?

We're showcasing for some US booking agents and blogs and some German labels. And there will also be the always supportive Canadians there too! We're going to be at Speakeasy Kabaret on Congress at 8 pm on the Saturday.

5) Which other bands/artists are you most looking forward to seeing over music week?

Sondre Lerche, The Joy Formidable, FM Belfast, Braids and Menomena for sure. And I want to get into that Erykah Badu show!

6) Will you visit the Film or Interactive sections of SxSW this year? Or is time tight?

Yeah, definitely would like to check some of that out. We're around for four days, so there's lots of time to take everything in.

7) What does the rest of 2011 hold for you?

Our record just came out on iTunes in the USA and is charting in Canada, so we're going to do some more touring in both Canada and the USA. And hopefully we can get a German label and capitalize on this opportunity to tour over there this year.
