Norman Palm lives and works in Berlin and Mexico City. He sings and writes tender songs, and is probably most famous for his slowed-down cover versions of Boys Don’t Cry and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun which have amassed many a view on YouTube.
However there's more to the man than that, and anyone who's heading to the South by Southwest Festival next week is in for a treat with his stunning audiovisual live shows.
Norman Palm has just released his second album Shore to Shore via City Slang.
He told us just how much he's looking forward to Austin:
I have never played at SxSW, and frankly I have never played in the US. The closest I got was playing in Mexico. I have visited Texas once as a teenager thought and remember everybody raving about Austin.
2) What's the best thing about being in Austin? Or if you've not been before.... What are your tourism related plans?
I wish I knew! I've seen some parts of Texas and I remember it to be very suburban, very hot and maybe a little boring? Every Texan tells me that Austin is the place to be and I am sure it will have a great vibe during the festival. As a tourist I will try to eat a very good steak, it's hard to find that in Berlin.
3) Why are you playing SxSW? ('Cos we hear the money isn't too good)
The money? No-one has told us about that! Yeah, actually we pay a lot of money to go to Austin, but we are fortunately funded by the German music export so we won't personally go bankrupt on this. My latest record "Shore to Shore" just came out all over Europe and I guess Austin will be the right place to show some Americans what we are up to. I would love to put out the record in the US and plays shows there, too.
4) Who are you showcasing for, and where and when can we expect to see you?
We are part of the official SXSW showcases, you can see me and my crazy Finnish band play on Friday, 18th at Malaia, 10pm sharp.
5) Which other bands/artists are you most looking forward to seeing over music week?
There are so many good bands playing and I am sure I'll go home whining about the ones I couldn't see. I am extra-keen on: Kurt Vile, my labelmates Menomena, tune-yards, James Blake, Anna Calvi and many more…
6) Will you visit the Film or Interactive sections of SxSW this year? Or is time tight?
I hope I will have time. I will be in Austin for the whole festival, so I think it will work!
7) What does the rest of 2011 hold for you?
I will go on tour in Europe right after SxSW. We'll play in Paris, Amsterdam, London, Brussels and finally my hometown Berlin where I haven't played in a while! So firstly touring it is, then I hope to spend more time on a new side project and in summer we will start writing and producing new Norman Palm songs.
