It's reasonable to assume that if the actual architecture in Finland was inspired by this band, it'd firmly resemble Relativity by M.C. Escher.
Hopefully by now, you've either nodded your head, or entered that into Wikipedia. "Unusual" is perhaps the watchword for this band, although in these modern times many bands have attempted similar feats of bizarreness. All these means is that you'll be hearing this band mentioned in conjuction with Modest Mouse or Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah! more than once. Likely by sub-standard journalists.
Opening track "Red Turned White" immediately brings to mind the vocal stylings of Modest Mouse combined with the instrumentation of Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah!. Although happily A.I.H's songs always seem necessary in their unpredictability, rather than being merely superfluous. It's never a bad thing to be kept on the edge of your seat by music, (unless you're listening to it via an iPod while travelling up a very tall mountain on a chair-lift) and this trait runs throughout the 31 minute duration of "Places Like This".
Oddly for a band comprised of such diverse instrumentation, most of the hooks on this album come courtesy of the two-tiered vocal delivery by Cameron Bird and Kellie Sutherland. This is especially apparent on "Hold Music" which is possibly the best indie-dance song since "Float On" hit the airwaves.
Also of note is the middle section of the L.P which seems reminiscent of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" were it to be written by Lewis Carrol. This is a theme that marvellously spans throughout three songs and really adds a sublime amount of depth to the destinations which "Places Like This" provides a tour of.
Replete with an impressive amount of infectious songs, "Places..." is indeed hard to fault, one could mention "Feather in a Baseball Cap" which has the inevitable task of being the creaky floorboard on the staircase. But then again, you might like the comforting sound of a creaking step when you're walking upstairs.
