My first experience of Santogold was frantically typing “who the heck does that Shockwaves music?†into Google.
Following that and managing to pick up an album, Santogold is pretty much 18 carat stuff... (terrible pun I know).
Santi White – a.k.a Santogold - from Brooklyn produces big, clunky African beats and bass along with indie / dub / hip hop infused catchy pop tunes to produce a very real, strong sound with a depth worthy of a small clap.
Sounding rather British in her approach it must be said that Santogold could have just as easily reigned from London as Brooklyn.
For a debut album it is an incredibly accomplished piece of work with the whole album sounding fresh from start to finish with no two tracks sounding much alike. This has likely been achieved through being a writer and producer herself. Working with the likes of Mark Ronson through to M.I.A and Ashlee Simpson the style mish-mash certainly shows it roots.
Due to track to track quality and variation, highlights of the album are hard to pick out. ‘L.E.S Artistes’ will likely become an anthem and ‘Creator’ is soon to find its way to every discotheque in the country. Despite this you may well find yourself returning to tracks ‘Lights Out’ and ‘I’m a Lady’ which are so instantly likeable through warm vocals and simplicity that they don’t tire.
With big acclaim already backing her name, this album is going to put Santogold into good stead for a very strong year indeed. Although put your head in the sand for the entourage of sound-a-like bands which will no doubt emerge.
