As evidenced by the recent auction of Picasso's handwritten notes and doodles featuring such gems as "I'm in the restaurant", (for over £1,000) people will buy anything if it's by someone they admire.
This is a fact which "Kill The House Lights" is banking on, it seems that no one along the way considered 'why' most of these songs were unreleased. The CD portion of the package features twelve tracks, of which, only three could be considered fully fledged unreleased songs.
Those aforementioned songs are the very first three tracks, "Ladies and Gentlemen - My Brother, the Failure", "Dead Songs" and "Voices on a String". The trio comprise woefully mundane songs which were obviously discarded for very good reason. Devoid of any of the spark or innovation which populated the bands studio albums, the only highlight of these efforts would be the mid-section of "...My Brother..." which segues into a rather lush breakdown which perfectly frames the rest of the song.
What about the rest of the tracks then? "Panic on the Streets of Health Care City" and "Music from Kill The House Lights" are both well crafted, yet criminally short instrumental mood pieces. "The Roar of Far Off Black Jets" is a one minute introduction proceeded by the "Full Collapse" version of "How Long Is The Night?". "A Sketch for Time's Arrow" while featuring some new material, was mostly recycled for the song "The Other Side of the Crash" from their most recent album "A City By The Light Divided".
After that, all your left with is various live, demo and alternate versions of songs already released. "Kill The House Lights" is likely to elicit the response of "Where's that eject button?" from newcomers to Thursday, and "Huh" from Thursday aficionados, followed by the CD being forevermore used as a dust magnet.
The bands aplomb at writing serene mood pieces is well illustrated by this CD, infinitely more interesting would of been the prospect of the band expanding upon this and providing a unique counterpart to the DVD. As it is though, the only purpose to this audio sidekick seems to be to make sure "Kill The House Lights" gets into all of the music shops as well as the DVD shops. Which as you may know, equals more sales, and more money.

I've been following Thursday since 2001 when Full Collapse came out and I think it's great to get these tracks. I understand it looks like a money maker but honestly I know Thursday and they are in it for the creative process and putting out great music. To say the songs are devoid of emotion is totally unfounded. I these songs should have been on A Light... I found their last one to be too experimental and boring. I'm glad to listen to the tracks in my car and be able to watch the DVD as well.
Hey Kev, like yourself, I've been a fan of Thursday's since "Full Collapse" came out. I have the upmost respect for the band and love all of their albums, but with this one. I failed to see the point of it.
This is especially so since everytime I saw them play live, the would preface the introduction of "Jet Black New Year" by saying something along the lines of "This is a favourite of ours, if you don't have it, download it from somewhere. Don't buy 'Five Stories Falling"
I fail to see how this CD is any different, same format, same label. Although I'd say the 'new' songs were probably written between "Full Collapse" and "War All the Time"
P.S. review said "devoid of spark or innovation", Saying thursday didn't have emotion would be like saying the earth doesn't have water.
I can also join this convo as a long term fan.. But a city by the light devided was a huge grower and an absolutely brilliant album, by no means boring! I personally will not be buying this album, most of the time songs are left off albums for a reason. To have all of them on one album?!.. I agree with Kevin in that they are not in the industry just to make a quick few quid, but I really don't get why they have released this record?
... And I have heard them comment similarly about the five stories falling record too.
i liked it, the songs are more hard like full collapse, anyone who likes that album should pick it up, plus the dvd and cd come together and i got it for 15 bucks, now a days you can't get a cd or a dvd for 15 bucks (american) but here you get it together, plus if you've been following them for awhile the dvd is fun to watch and i was at the show they took the live footage from and still loved it
Ouch
